In fact, the terms are often used interchangeably, which is part of what has caused so much confusion. Before making any choices about our outdoor lighting, there are some things that you should be aware of.

As the name would imply, landscape lighting is meant to put the focus on your landscaping after the sun has set. However, a common misconception is that this type of outdoor lighting is only meant to bring attention to certain elements of your property. Yet, by bringing attention to select components, it also means taking the focus away from anything you may not want to have as part of the visual aesthetics.
Security lighting is more utilitarian. So, while landscape lights are meant to use color or softness to add to the layout and design, security lights are intended to be bold and strong. This extra light makes it difficult for criminal activity to occur, without being noticed.
Landscape lights are meant to help your home feel inviting while security lights are meant to make it feel as though uninvited guests are not welcome. The latter can be quite intimidating, as opposed to a form of salutation.
However, one thing that both styles of exterior lighting systems achieve is that they reduce the opportunities criminals have to gain access to your home, or even vandalize it. A crook is less likely to strike a home with outdoor lighting, since they seek out easy targets, where they can go undetected.
Another commonality that both types of lights have is enhanced safety. Moving from the car to the home or maneuvering around walkways is dangerous after dark, unless you have access to a light source.
